Skype is Shutting Down: What’s next?

Well, it’s official—Skype is shutting down on May 5, 2025. That means no more calls, no more chats, and no more quiet little corners of the internet for those of us who preferred it over the more crowded platforms. Personally, I’ve been using Skype for a long time. I don’t do social media, and WhatsApp always felt a bit too crowded and overwhelming. Skype was my go-to—simple, effective, and free from the chaos. But now, with its shutdown, people using Skype now need to decide their next step.

So, why is this happening? Microsoft is moving everything over to Microsoft Teams. Skype has been fading into the background for years, with Zoom and FaceTime taking the spotlight. Instead of keeping Skype alive, Microsoft decided to merge its features into Teams, aiming for one all-in-one communication solution for both work and personal use.

If you’re still using Skype, the transition isn’t too painful. You can log into Microsoft Teams using your existing Skype credentials, and your contacts and chat history will carry over automatically. For now, Skype users can still communicate with Teams users, and if you use Skype for international calls, the Skype Web Portal will stay open for a while.

How to Save Your Skype Data

If you’re like me and want to hold onto your old conversations, you’ll need to act fast. Microsoft lets you export your chat history and call logs, but you have to do it manually through Skype’s official website. You can find the step-by-step guide here: Export Skype Chat History.

Additionally, make sure to back up your important contacts by saving them manually. Microsoft hasn’t specified how long the migration to Teams will keep your contacts intact, so it’s best to have a personal backup just in case.

What’s Next? Continue with Teams or Switch to an Alternative

Now, the big question—what’s next? If you want a seamless transition, Microsoft Teams is the easiest option since your Skype data and contacts will be moved automatically. It keeps you within the Microsoft ecosystem and offers similar communication features, just with a more modern interface and integration with other Microsoft services.

But if you’re looking for something different, especially a platform that’s less crowded and more privacy-focused, I started testing alternatives. Signal seems like a solid choice. It’s secure, offers end-to-end encryption, and supports texting, voice calls, video calls, and file sharing. Plus, it’s available on both iOS and Android, which makes the switch easy. If you’re also looking for a cleaner, more private option, it might be worth checking out.

Here are few more alternatives:

Messaging AppKey FeaturesSecurity & Privacy
TelegramCloud-based messaging, group chats (up to 200,000 members), large file sharing (up to 2GB), voice/video callsEnd-to-end encryption (optional), Secret Chat for privacy
Element (Matrix)Open-source platform, supports group chats, video calls, and file sharingEnd-to-end encryption by default, can be self-hosted
ThreemaNo phone number required, supports text, voice/video calls, and file sharingEnd-to-end encryption, minimal data storage
Jitsi MeetOpen-source video conferencing, no account required, supports screen sharing and meeting recordingFully encrypted video calls, no data stored on servers

Final Thoughts

Skype has been around for ages, offering a simple, no-fuss way to stay connected. But with Microsoft moving on, we have to move on too. Whether you decide to switch to Microsoft Teams or explore other options like Signal, now’s the time to back up your data and find the best alternative before Skype is permanently shut down.
